Shilajit (pronounced shee-lah-jeet) is one of the hottest topics in our shop right now. It’s been touted as THE THING on TikTok for men to take for everything from athletic endurance to erectile dysfunction. And, since we carry shilajit in the shop, we get a lot of questions from guys wanting to increase their sexual and workout performance.
But does it work? Is shilajit nature’s Viagra? Here are the top three questions we get about shilajit and what you really need to know before you try it.
Does shilajit actually work for sexual endurance?
The short answer is….maybe. If you’ve been looking for credible research and resources on shilajit, you’re not alone. There is not a lot of trustworthy information out there and to make matters worse, there are a lot of scammers who would have you believe that A. their product is the best (when it hasn’t been tested properly) and B. that their product will guarantee you results when no one can or should be doing that.
Shilajit studies in humans are few and far between. One particular research study in men showed that those who were taking the higher dose of shilajit promoted the retention of muscular strength versus the study’s control group. But, many health practitioners and naturopaths are not sold on its use for sexual endurance without more research.
Does shilajit help with erectile dysfunction?
Shilajit cannot cure erectile dysfunction. But, it might be able to help via its ayurvedic effects. Ayurveda originated in India thousands of years ago and is a traditional Indian system of healthcare that focuses on maintaining balance and harmony between the mind, body and spirit. Some practitioners have noted that practicing ayurvedic techniques in reducing stress and fear, alongside shilajit, helps to activate the sympathetic nervous system and can help create the relaxed environment needed to produce an erection.
Again, not many – if any – studies have been done on human males, but there has been a study on rats that showed some improvement on blood and collagen flow to the penile tissues, with the conclusion that much more research is needed, including research on humans.
Does shilajit improve testosterone levels?
We’d love to be able to say this for sure, but the answer again is: maybe. There was a promising study on humans aged 45-55 in 2015. The volunteers took a 250mg dose twice a day for 90 days and at the end of the study, those who took shilajit had increased their total and free testosterone levels as compared with the control (or placebo) group. More studies are needed in order to conclusively make the claim on shilajit’s positive impact testosterone levels.
Another study in mice in 2024 looked at shilajit’s potential for improving fertility in cases of testicular damage caused by chemotherapeutic drugs. They found that shilajit improved testicular daily production and sperm quality in the mice but no humans have been tested under these conditions to date.
So What is Shilajit and What is it Good For?
Shilajit is a sticky, black, tar-like substance found in the rocks of high mountain ranges, particularly the Himalayas. It’s incredibly rich in minerals and fulvic acid, which is a potent antioxidant.
While testosterone and men’s sexual health have taken up a lot of the hype around shilajit, they’re not the primary health benefits of the mineral. In fact, shilajit can benefit all bodies, not just those who identify as male.
Shilajit can help with:
- Alzeihmer’s disease
- Chronic fatigue syndrome
- Iron deficiency
- Heart health
- Improve bone density
- Reduce inflammation
