Sea Moss? More Like Sea BOSS. If you’ve been to our shop lately, you’ve likely run across Irish sea moss, sea moss gel, and dried sea moss. You’ve also probably seen the viral social media posts by celebrities touting sea moss for a million different health benefits. That’s because sea moss is so packed with nutrients, vitamins, and minerals that it’s gathered quite the fan following.

Should you set sail on the sea moss boat? Read on to find out!

1. Sea moss is an ocean vegetable, not moss.

Just like algae and kelp, sea moss is one of many vegetables that grow wild in our oceans. Unlike the moss you find on rocks in our land forests, sea moss, or Chondrus crispus, is a spindly plant with fronds from the seaweed family and comes in shades of green, yellow, and dark purple. Also known as Irish moss, sea moss grows in the tidepools and inlets of Europe, North America, and the British Isles.

2. You’ve already eaten sea moss.

Sea moss is harvested by the food industry for its carrageenan, a jelly-like substance used as a thickener in ice cream, non-dairy milk, cottage cheese, baby formula, etc. It’s even in shoe polish and toothpaste!

3. Sea moss is a superfood.

Sea moss is LOADED with prebiotic fiber, antioxidants, magnesium, potassium, B vitamins, iodine, calcium, zinc, and more. This powerful combination naturally helps to:

  • Boost immunity
  • Balance the gut
  • Dissolve mucus
  • Aid in workout recovery
  • Reduce acid reflux
  • Aid in weight loss
  • Support heart health
  • Boost testosterone

4. Smoothies, oatmeal, soups and more.

Remember that sea moss is an ocean vegetable? Yup, that means you can eat it in just about anything or eat it plain! Try this easy sea moss chocolate bark.

5. Sea moss may make thyroid issues worse.

As good as sea moss is, you may want to avoid it if you have a thyroid disorder. Sea moss is high in iodine, which the thyroid needs in order to be healthy. Too much iodine, though, and you can run into negative issues like thyroid cancer. If you have a thyroid condition or thyroid disease, check with your health practitioner before trying sea moss.
